Power Washing

It is essential that before any oil or stain is applied to your deck that the timber is thoroughly cleaned of any dirt, mould, bird droppings and loose or flaking previous products.

To do this we scrub in special cleaning agents, which are specifically designed for the cleaning and brightening of timber. These products are also safe around your family and pets and are natural and environmentally friendly.

Once the cleaning and brightening products have been scrubbed in and penetrated the pores top layer, we then carefully and methodically power wash the area of the deck which has just been treated to remove the built up dirt on the deck. Many people are quite surprised how much dirt can build up on what looks like a relatively clean deck.

It is vital that the process is completed in small enough areas so as the cleaning product doesn’t dry on the deck. Once the deck is dry it will look lighter and clean and is now ready for the oil or stain to be applied.

Timber Sanding

Some decks which have been neglected and the top layer has deteriorated or a colour change is favoured, may require sanding back to bare timber.

It is essential that the correct sanding tools and techniques be applied so as to achieve an even flat deck ready for the oil or stain to be applied.

We are equipped with the highest quality German made Rotex sanders. These machines not only remove the old surface efficiently and to the highest standard but they also coupled with a dust extraction system for a clean dust free environment.

Timber Preparation

A mistake which occurs quite often with new decks is applying an oil or stain too soon after the deck has been built. New decks require a period of 4 to 6 weeks weathering outdoors before the bare timber can be coated. This is because natural oils and tannins need to leach out of the timber before any coating is applied to the timber. Failing to do this will result in the top layer of the timber breaking down over time and may result in the decking requiring replacing.

However, we can use special products, which are designed to draw these oils and tannins out of the timber so you don’t have to wait 4 – 6 weeks before your new deck is ready for oiling or staining. You can now have your deck ready to enjoy sooner and looking its beautiful best, just as it was designed to be.

Treatment of Mould and Moss

Mould and moss on your timber deck is a killer! If left untreated it will eventually destroy the timber and the affected boards will need to be replaced. This can be a very expensive exercise.

Once we have removed any source of the mould and then cleaned the timber, we apply a special mould preventer agent specifically designed for timber. This will help prevent the re-occurrence of the mould. Once the timber is dry it will be ready for the finishing product. Again, it is essential to use the correct product, particularly if mould is a recurring problem.

Rejuvenation of Old Timber

The first thing that must be done to rejuvenate old timber is to check that there are no rotting pieces. It’s easy to check if the timber is rotted by simply pressing a screwdriver into it. If the screwdriver pushes easily into the timber and the timber fibres breakaway then the rotted timber needs to be replaced.

There are basically three processes, which can be used to prepare old timber for re-oiling and finishing.

One method is to completely sand the timber back to bare timber and then wash the timber with a timber cleaner and brightener. It is very important that the timber is washed after sanding with the timber cleaner and brightener or the timber will go a very dark colour when the oil or finishing product is applied. Complete sanding of a deck is usually reserved for timber that is in a very poor state or a colour change is desired.

The second method is to use a chemical timber stripping gel to remove old and worn finishes. Once the stripping gel has penetrated the old finish a paint scrapper is used to remove the blistered and softened old finish. The timber must then be washed down with a timber cleaning and brightening treatment.

The third method is to soak the timber with a timber cleaning and brightening solution, scrub it in vigorously and power wash it off before it dries on the surface. This method will usually remove most contaminates and loose or flaking finishes.

Once the timber has been sanded, chemically stripped and cleaned, it is then ready for the finishing oil treatment. We always apply three coats when working over bare timber. This will give a beautiful deep colour and long lasting finish.

Timber Staining & Oiling

Whether you want your deck or timber stained, oiled or coated with one of the newer water based penetrating oils, we can look after it for you.

The harsh Australian conditions places a lot of strain on timber decks so it is imperative that it has regular maintenance performed on it. This not only keeps your deck looking beautiful but it also nourishes and protects the timber so it will last for many years to come.

Timber Stains give you the ability to change the colour of your deck to match your décor. Unlike traditional oils which bring out the natural colour of the timber, a stain can completely transform the look of your deck and there are a multitude of colours to choose from. Stains are semi-transparent so they allow the natural grain of the timber to show through enhancing its beauty.

Natural Timber Oils provide a semi transparent matt finish and are excellent for nourishing the timber and preventing mould growth. However, they require more regular applications than the newer water based treatments. Natural Timber Oils are slow drying and also have a high VOCs.

Water based Decking Oils provide a penetrating oil which dries with a protective coating on the top of the timber. The water based coatings have UV filters and are more resistant to dust and scuffing. They also dry faster and last twice as long as traditional decking oils. Water based Decking Oils have the benefit of being fast drying, low odour, non-toxic and have low VOCs.
